Former East Renfrewshire Councillor Eddie Phillips is carving out a new career as an author at the age of 70.

And some of the terrifying elements of the book are certainly miles away from the political plotting of a council chamber.

But Eddie said: “They are not based directly on certain people I have come across in politics . . . but certainly an amalgam of some!

”It has everything from drug barons to a stalker from nobility.”

The new book is his second and is actually a follow-on from his debut Achillies Heel- Your Stalker Solution, with the same main character who finally overcame her stalker.

It is set in the world of TV and the Channel 8 radio station, or Channel Hate as the establishment referred to it as.

A terrible and bloody feud between the 28-year-old reporter Lizzie Spector and a famous author Ruby Latimer is at its heart.

Eddie revealed it is currently going well and in fact sold out, with more copies being rushed to the printers and hopefully available from December 8.

The dad-of-two uses the pen name EJ Goldberg Phillips after one of his ancestors to add a bit of intrigue.

His work has been applauded by leading Tartan Noir author Brookmyre, who is keen to encourage him.

Chris said: “Congratulations are due on writing this novel. It is no small feat – Eddie has worked to inspire a passion for creative writing among young people.”

Eddie left politics in 2012 and was a former planning chairman for East Ren and an environment convenor.

In his working life he was a union rep at the former National Savings Bank in Cowglen.

Eddie said: “I have come across all sorts of people in my life, full of funny and sad stories.

“I am into poetry and short stories and when I hear something of interest I write them down.”

He uses his fertile imagination and wealth of memories to conjure up sinister, at times disturbing, images of the seedier side of life — and death.

Now living in Kilwinning, he has completed another two novels and is nearing the end of a third.

If “Now One Will Hear You Scream” continues to sell well, it is likely the next will hit the bookshelves.

And he added: “It is amazing what you can do in lockdown. I do hope to keep it up because I love it.

“And the new book has actually seen a lift in sales from the original Achillies Heel, which is great.

“I am very gratified to have found a publisher in Austin Macauley. It is so difficult to get a publisher and I know someone who had tried and failed with 176 publishers.”

No One Will Hear You Scream, priced £10.99, is available in paperback from Austin Macauley Publishers, bookshops and Amazon Kindle.

And it comes with a note of warning . . . “This is not a book for the squeamish. It is a genuine adult crime thriller which will keep you guessing as to who has done it! Read on and all will be revealed – maybe!”
